Title: Linux Systems Administrator

Location: Bloomington, MN

Duration: 6+ months (long-term, ongoing)



Business Overview:

Infrastructure Services - Platform Services Design and Engineering team.



Responsibilities/Deliverables that the resource will be responsible for:

* Systems Management and Administration (Linux and Unix Server Platforms)

* Minimum eight years of experience in Enterprise Linux/Unix Systems Administration

* Collaboratively Manage a large and diverse Linux and Unix server technology portfolio in the capacity of technical subject matter expert

* Work closely with IT leadership and clients on the initiation, selection, design, and implementation of new technologies

* Create technical documentation - roadmaps, presentations, cost models, etc.

* Design and create technical designs that can be deployed and operated by service provider partners

* Initiate operational and process improvements that increase the stability and overall efficiency of Best Buy's corporate Linux/Unix server technology portfolio

* Provide Level Three and Level Four problem escalation support and troubleshooting

* Develop positive working relationships and actively manage service provider partners to established service levels

* Extensive background of eight or more years in enterprise Linux/Unix systems administration

* Converged Blade server infrastructure expertise (e.g. HP Virtual Connect or Cisco UCS experience)

* Experience working with Storage Area Network, backup technologies, DNS, NIS+, LDAP, Linux Clustering, etc.

* Linux administration/installation/standardization, Java code deployments, batch scripting, Perl, BASH, etc.

* LDAP and security administration, network and load balancer troubleshooting, JBOSS monitoring and configuration, log analysis and monitoring, storage and file space management, VMWare

* Build and Manage Relationships with Third Party Service Providers

* Develop and maintain positive working relationships with service providers

* Work with service providers to direct implementation of Best Buy systems designs

* Understand and manage service providers in the attainment of Service Levels

* Build and Manage Client Relationships

* Develop understanding of client requirements regarding computer systems

* Design services and solutions based on client feedback and a broad understanding of client needs

* Work collaboratively with IT service providers that are required to deliver computer system services

* Communicate effectively regarding system operations and environment changes



What would a normal day for this position look like??

Software deployments of software releases, job monitoring of daily batch jobs, environment troubleshooting.



Skills Overview:

1. At least 6 years of Linux System Administration experience in a large Enterprise environment.

2. Extensive Technical Leadership Experience

3. Strong network and server troubleshooting skills in a mixed technology environment

4. Quality conscious with the ability to plan and implement on time

5. Strong communication abilities and ability to work in a team environment

6. Strong operational\break-fix experience

7. Exim\Postfix SMTP gateways

8. BIND DNS

9. OpenDS or OpenLDAP

10. Solr\Lucene

11. JBOSS\Middleware (backup for Chris)

12. Experience with VMware

13. Command line scripting (Perl/Shell)

14. Amazon AWS\EC2 or Azure - preferred



What are the technologies and the depth of the technologies that a candidate must have in order to be successful in this role?

1. Linux expertise ( RedHat required) - 6 + years

2. High knowledge of networking routing, load balancing and firewalls

3. Experience working with VMWare - vSphere

4. Scripting and monitoring experience in a Linux environment



What are the soft skills that you feel candidates must-have in order to be successful in this role?

1. Strong communication (verbal and written). With the ability to document technology processes

2. Ability to work in a team environment and to collaborate closely with team developers and corporate resources

3. Ability to redirect priorities if needed and articulate implementation plans when needed
